Working as a session musician or being a International Session Musician. An LW Music Business Consultant, Speaker & Author Indie Musician Blog Video.

In the music industry market of today, a session musician needs to work hard to find the opportunities out there. Whether you are working as a musician in a band, working as a back up player or a sub musicians, you need to be creative to keep the paychecks coming in.

One of the things I recommend as a music consultant to the session musician level players or even the seasoned session musicians to reach out to promoters, talent buyers and management companies that bring over international bands. Its like setting in place international marketing plans for your work. If you have the skills that are helping you on your way to becoming a session musician, you may want to look to the international marketing skills to get out there even further.

Sometimes, there will be issues with Visas, passports, papers or whatever. So be proactive, reach out and talk about being considered a backup for a musician that might not be able to cross in to the US. Do not take the passive approach of assuming only the best. The more prepared in advance that you are for potential problems, issues and delays, the less of the chance for all those things to happen.

It is one more avenue and approach to take in order to keep taking the gigs to make what you need to in order to survive in this industry and this economy. Taking the approach of making sure your passport is updated, your apartment is able to be rented to some one else or their is someone to take care of it, as well as building a more international network, it will increase the opportunities. Session musicians, back up musicians and artists alike need to address these aspects.

Those that are stepping out of the mold, looking for every opportunity that exists in their back yard as well as overseas will find success in the up and down industry of today. Those that can prepare for the worst while setting up the most avenues for the best will find them selves in the best place to take on the music industry of today.
